A little known fact about the mental health profession is that couples therapy is one of the hardest types of therapy to do. In individual therapy, a new relationship is born at the beginning of the treatment. In couples therapy, the clients come into treatment with a preexisting relationship that the therapist joins with. Learning about that relationship and respecting its boundaries, while helping push couples to break destructive relationship patterns, takes quite a bit of energy and thought.
I am fascinated by couples therapy. Not only is it the focus of my graduate research, it has been a primary focus in my practice. I believe that love grows as intimacy grows, and intimacy takes learning more about your partner while reframing what you already know.
